Kannada Sleeper Hit Premada Oorali Fights for Screens as Ramayana Opens

BENGALURU — Few films in recent Kannada cinema have travelled as far from their starting point as Premada Oorali. Released on September 25 with just 60 shows and an opening day reported at under ₹10 lakh, the small-scale village drama has gone on to gross more than ₹117 crore in India. This week, as Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana takes over screens nationwide, it faces the hardest test of a six-week run.

From a quiet opening to a sleeper hit

Directed by Manoj Kumar, the Kannada-language film features Rangayana Raghu, Shree Raam, Tapaswini Poonaccha and Ramika Shivu. It has no major star and was backed by little pre-release publicity. Trade trackers describe it as a gentle romantic family drama set in a village, and reports say it cost only a few crore rupees to make. One tracker put its budget at about ₹2.5 crore.

Its first week brought in roughly ₹6 crore. Then something unusual happened: collections kept rising. The film earned about ₹27 crore in its second week and around ₹39 crore in its third, according to one tracker. Another reported over ₹42 crore for the third week and called it the biggest third week for any Kannada film.

Milestones along the way

The milestones followed quickly. The film crossed ₹100 crore worldwide on Day 26 and, according to Sacnilk, overtook Yash’s Toxic to become the highest-grossing Kannada film of 2026 by India net. It reached ₹100 crore gross in India after 28 days. It also crossed two million tickets on BookMyShow and recorded more than 38 lakh theatrical footfalls by Day 19.

Its fourth weekend alone brought in about ₹14.21 crore gross, with online ticket sales that week reported at 83 per cent above its entire opening week. The sixth weekend, the latest completed one, added about ₹4.83 crore, nearly five times its opening weekend. On the sixth Friday it earned ₹75 lakh, taking the running total to ₹117.05 crore gross. Trackers expect a finish of ₹120 to ₹125 crore.

If it reaches that range, it would become the fourth highest-grossing Kannada film in Karnataka, behind Kantara: Chapter 1, Kantara and KGF Chapter 2. Nearly all of its earnings have come from the home state, a pattern that makes the film’s feat more notable.

Why it matters for Kannada cinema

The success has landed at an important moment. Kannada cinema recently suffered a setback with Toxic, a high-profile release that fell short of expectations. Premada Oorali has offered a very different example: a modest, word-of-mouth success driven by families rather than fan clubs. Trade writers have compared its trajectory to other recent sleeper hits that began slowly before exploding.

Facing the Ramayana squeeze

Ramayana’s release changes the situation. The film has taken a large number of screens across India, and its Kannada version, which stars Kannada icon Yash as Ravana, collected an estimated ₹3.91 crore by 4 pm on its first day. Any additional Kannada-language showtimes for the new epic could come at the expense of films already in their sixth week.

Premada Oorali is already running on reduced screens. It earned around ₹60 lakh on its 40th day, and trackers had warned that its holding power would face a stern test once the festival releases arrived. The makers have not announced an OTT date, so for now the audience that wants to see it must find it in theatres.

What to watch

The film’s next three days are the most important. If it keeps a small base of shows in single screens and smaller towns across Karnataka, it can still add several crore before the run ends. If exhibitors move aggressively to Ramayana, its final total could stall closer to ₹120 crore.

Either way, the story is already one of the year’s clearest reminders that regional cinema can still succeed without scale, stars or spectacle.
