Kangana Ranaut Credits Anupam Kher's Role for Bringing 'Emergency' to Life

Kangana Ranaut recently opened up about her upcoming film Emergency, revealing how integral veteran actor Anupam Kher was to the project.

Kangana Ranaut, who is directing and starring in the film as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, candidly stated that she wouldn’t have gone forward with the movie if Kher had declined the pivotal role of Jayaprakash Narayan, a key figure in India’s political history.

In a recent interview, Kangana Ranaut praised Kher’s honesty and dedication as an actor, calling him a pillar of authenticity and integrity in the film industry. “Anupam ji’s involvement brought a level of gravitas and emotional depth to the film that I could not imagine achieving with anyone else in that role,” Ranaut shared. She described Kher as someone who embodies the ability to connect deeply with audiences, a quality she believed was essential for portraying a historical character of such importance.

The film Emergency delves into one of the most controversial periods in Indian political history, the Emergency declared by Indira Gandhi in 1975. It required actors to fully immerse themselves into their characters to bring the era and its conflicts to life. Ranaut emphasized that the role of Jayaprakash Narayan, a leader of the resistance against the Emergency, demanded an actor of Kher’s caliber—someone with a rich understanding of the era and the ability to convey a spectrum of emotions with nuance.

“Anupam ji’s ability to deliver raw, unfiltered performances made him my first and only choice for the role,” Kangana Ranaut said. She admitted that the thought of casting someone else never crossed her mind. “If he had said no, I genuinely don’t think I would have proceeded with the project. His trust in me as a filmmaker gave me immense confidence.”

Kher, known for his versatility and decades-long career in cinema, has often collaborated with Ranaut in the past. Speaking about their professional dynamic, Ranaut remarked on the mutual respect they share, saying that his feedback and insights during the filming process were invaluable. She recounted how Kher’s candidness sometimes posed challenges but ultimately elevated the film. “Anupam ji is brutally honest, and that’s what makes him such a powerful performer. He never sugarcoats his opinions, and that honesty is what makes him a great collaborator,” she said.

Kher also expressed his admiration for Kangana Ranaut vision and determination. In his words, working with her on Emergency was an enriching experience, as she approached her dual responsibilities as director and actor with remarkable focus and clarity. He highlighted her meticulous research and dedication to authenticity, both in her own portrayal of Indira Gandhi and in ensuring that every character was rendered with historical accuracy and emotional depth.

The decision to helm Emergency as both director and lead actor was a bold move for Ranaut. The film marks her second directorial venture after Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. In discussing her journey, she admitted that directing a project of such scale was daunting but rewarding. “Directing and acting simultaneously was a challenge, but it was made easier by having co-stars like Anupam ji who brought their A-game to every scene,” she shared.

Kangana Ranaut also touched on the larger themes of the film, describing Emergency as a story of resilience, leadership, and the clash of ideologies. While the political backdrop is significant, she noted that the film’s core lies in its human drama and the personal struggles of the individuals involved.

The film has been generating significant buzz since its announcement, with audiences eagerly awaiting its release to see Ranaut’s portrayal of one of the most complex political figures in Indian history. The teaser and promotional materials have already showcased the intensity of the performances, promising a gripping narrative.

As Emergency inches closer to its release date, Kangana Ranaut revelations about her creative process and the crucial role Anupam Kher played in shaping the film have only heightened expectations. The film is set to offer a cinematic exploration of a pivotal chapter in India’s history, brought to life by an ensemble cast led by two powerhouse performers.
